Install Docker 1.11 on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS x64

Introduction

Docker is a container management software that wraps up applications into isolated virtualized linux container that can be easily transferred between different host systems. When you develop an application, you can define the environment by putting the application into a docker container and you ship the environment with your application. This should reduce dependencies enormously.

Prerequisites

I assume you have a running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS x64 installation and you are able to access it via ssh and you have root access.

Install Docker

Execute the following commands:

When done, Docker 1.11 is installed to your Ubuntu server. When writing this article the latest version available is 1.11.1.

You should be able to execute the following command to make sure your installation works fine:

The output should look like this:

Docker hello world output

Congratulations. Your Docker 1.11 installation is up and running.
