Install HHVM on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS x64


HHVM (HipHop Virtual Machine) is a execution environment for PHP- and Hack-based applications based on just-in-time compilation. It is multiple times faster than normal PHP installations, but has some compatibility problems with many applications, so you should make sure your application runs with HHVM before you fire up your application with it.


I assume you have a running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS x64 server and root access to it.


First, we have to make sure add-apt-repository is available, which is part of software-properties-common:

Next we have to import the signing key of the hhvm repository:

Add the hhvm repository:

Update the package lists:

Install hhvm:

Run HHVM at boot time

If you are using HHVM to run your website, you should start HHVM at boot time. Run the following command to make sure this is done:

Configure nginx or Apache to use HHVM

Execute the following command and the script will determine whether you are using nginx or Apache and will automatically configure it to use HHVM.

Congratulations. You are now running HHVM on your server.
